The Rice Diet is a lifestyle diet program that has been around for nearly a century. It was first developed back in 1939. However, it wasn’t until 2006 that it gained any real level of popularity. It was at that time that “The Rice Diet Solution” book was published.

What is The Rice Diet?

The original version of the diet was created by a physician from Duke University, named Dr. Walter Kemper. He wanted to try to come up with an eating program that would assist in the treatment of kidney disease and of high blood pressure. Once the book was released, the Rice Diet started to truly take off and has spread around the world as a weight loss method, as well. In fact, in Durham, North Carolina, there is now a Rice Diet Lifestyle Clinic that teaches the concepts that were created by Dr. Kemper.

The directions for the Rice Diet are meant to allow a dieter to be able to eat well without feeling hungry. In this way, they will naturally decrease their intake of calories, sodium, sugar, fat, and protein. It is also designed to provide a certain degree of cleansing and detoxing of the body in that it promotes hydration, nutrition, and regularity.

Among the most restrictive parts of this diet is that no alcoholic beverages are permitted. Instead, the dieter is supposed to focus on eating servings of vegetables, fruits, and non-fat dairy, as well as lean proteins and whole grains.

There are three different phases that make up the complete Rice Diet. The first of these phases is a very low calorie diet, where there is a limit of 800 daily calories. That said, over time, the caloric intake rises to 1,200. Throughout the entire diet, the individual is supposed to keep up with regular exercise. That could potentially prove to be challenging considering the small amount of energy that is being consumed through the individual’s daily meals.

According to the official website for the Rice Diet, women lose an average of 20 pounds during their first month of this program, while men lose an average of 30 pounds. That is extremely fast weight loss. It is highly recommended that a doctor be consulted before considering the use of this diet program as it is not appropriate for everyone. Diets with very low calorie restrictions are typically controversial and have a track record for unwanted side effects and for rebounding weight.
