Review: Noom Diet

Noom Diet ReviewAnyone who has been online or who has watched TV in any capacity over the last couple of years has most certainly heard of the Noom Diet.  This weight loss program has used intensive marketing to reach people and share its promised psychology-based approach to improving eating habits.

Noom Diet Claims

Instead of tackling an intake of fat, calories, sugar, or carbohydrates, the Noom Diet uses technology meant to change the way dieters think so they will naturally alter the way they eat. This is far from a new concept, but the use of the brand’s app makes the idea more convenient.  Since it first put out its dieting app in 2013, it has been downloaded more than 50 million times. At the time this review was written, it maintained a solid 4.4 (out of 5) stars on Google Play from a total 260,975 reviews.

The Noom Diet is based on its Healthy Weight Program, which includes an overall wellness plan. This takes eating, exercise and mental health components into consideration.  The focus of this plan is meant to be long-term weight management instead of simply reaching a goal in the shorter term.

Familiar Steps

As is the case with many dieting programs, the Noom Diet uses an app to let you enter your general health information, gender, age, weight, and height, as well as your goal weight, social circles and other lifestyle components. From there, you track your food choices, exercise, and other factors.

The app provides feedback on food selections to support making better choices for reaching a targeted weight. It also has a built-in pedometer that will help to track steps provided the phone goes everywhere the individual does. The program encourages regular exercise and offers recommendations to help keep dieters moving.

How Long is the Noom Diet Program?

The base Noom Diet program is 16 weeks long. It uses personal coaching with personalized feedback through a messaging feature in the app.  The dieter’s coach is there to help with overcoming obstacles, though a virtual weight loss forum is also there to help receive and share support with other members.

Programs in the Noom Diet can be structured for meeting certain medical needs as well, such as diets for preventing or managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The program is free for the first two weeks, after which there is a fee for the next three months.  The Noom Diet auto-renews unless the member actively cancels it before the next renewal date.
